Chapter II. Nature of souls.

But we must note that the soul is not consciousness itself (jnanamatram), but it is by its nature the subject of consciousness or knower {jndtf) (p. 538). In judgments like, 1 know' or, 1 am happy' that which is expressed by the term, 1' is the soul.
