Thus again, in every work of the pious, despair and the confidence of faith dwell together in his heart; despair on account of himself and his own work, confidence on account of God and His mercy. 1 It is self- evident that Luther, entertaining such views, must, as we have seen in the Resolittiones, reject the traditional doctrine concern- ing the merit of saints. } The doctrine of the sacraments became involved in the indul- gence controversy in connection with that concerning the sacra- m...ent of penance. Luther's fundamental principle here was : Only faith secures the grace of the sacrament. He then at once, as notably in the above-mentioned sermon, Von der Bereitung zum hochwiirdigen Sacrament des Abendmahls, assures the spir- itually distressed that wherever there is but firm faith in the grace to be obtained, there is already also the worthy preparation. But faith must now cling to the Word oi grace, the promise connected with the sacrament. This brings us back again to the essential significance which Luther, in treating of the sacrament, has up to this time attributed, and continues to attribute, to the Word.
