132. Relation between Energy and Momentum. In our work on the dynamics of a particle we found that the mass of a particle was equal to its energy divided by the square of the velocity of light, and hence have come to expect in general a necessary relation between the existence of momentum in any particular direction and the trans- fer of energy in that same direction. We find, however, in the case of elastically stressed bodies a somewhat more compUcated state of affairs than in the case of par...ticles, since besides the energy which is transported bodily by the motion of the medium an additional quan- tity of energy may be transferred through the medium by the action of the forces which hold it in its state of strain. Thus, for example, in the case of a longitudinally compressed rod moving parallel to its length, the forces holding it in its state of longitudinal compression will be doing work at the rear end of the rod and delivering an equal quantity of energy at the front end, and this additional transfer of energy must be included in the calculation of the momentum of the bar.
