All that tends not to charity is figure.
The only object of the Scripture is charity. Whatever tends not to this exclus
...ive end is but its figure : for, since there is but one end, every thing that does not tend to it in literal words, is figure.
God thus diversifies this one precept of charity, in order to satisfy our curiosity, which seeks diversity, by this diversity, whicl leads us ever towards the one thing needful. For one thing only is necessary, and we love variety ; and God satisfies both by these diversities, which lead to the one thing needful.
XIV.
The Eabbins interpret figuratively the breasts of the Spouse,' and every thing which does not express their only object, — temporal good.
