The Twelfth Massachusetts was raised by Fletcher Webster of Marshfield, who was commissioned colonel, and commanded the regiment until he was killed at the second battle of Bull Run, Aug. 30, 1862. a call for volunteers issued by Fletcher Webster. The meeting was addressed by William Dehon, Esq. , Edward Riddle, Hon. Charles L. Woodbury, Mr. Webster, and others. After reading the proclamation of Gov. Andrew, Mr. Webster said he had offered his services for the purpose of raising a regiment to serve the United States during the continuance of the existing difficulties.
