We have already mentioned that in walking with extended knee the pelvis and trunk must describe a much more pronounced external movement than when the knee is bent. We know also that the thigh cannot be raised up high if the knee is kept extended (Fig. 34). The result, therefore, will be
...a very short step. Further, a glance at Fig. 34 will shew that the foot would touch the ground with the heel alone; this would render the position very unstable. If the foot were brought down in plantar flexion, so that the toes first touch the ground, the stability of the body would not be materially increased, while the strain on the muscles would soon cause great fatigue ; the walking would result in a series of shocks to the whole body, as well as to each individual joint, which would have most serious conse- quences.
