Stebbins in the board of regents when Mr. Tompkins died, nearly three years after this. It was a most fortunate thing for the University that it had his services for these few years, but most unfortunate that it lost him when it did, before the time of its great struggle with the Legislature.

" He was Mayor of Oakland at the time of his death. His theology, never very rigid, relaxed notably in his last days, and he followed his pastor, the late Rev. L. Hamilton, out of the Presbyterian Church, as a protest against the doc- trine of eternal punishment.
