But Sebastian Cabot the year before had already discovered the continent; so had Americus Vespucius. The trip was one of great suffering and disappointment. To the mental distress which well-nigh overwhelmed him were added the tortures of gout and failing sight; still he did not surrender to changing fortune, and with unshaken fortitude he revisited the scenes of his first discoveries and touched from time to time at new islands.
