' 1 Still, though monogamy seems to have been the normal state of matters, there are to be found, without any accompanying note of reprobation or disapproval, traces of Polygamy? There is allusion to ' the husband of many maidens, ' with approbation. In one hymn the Aswins are praised : ' You stripped off from the aged Chyavana his entire skin, as if it had been a coat of mail ; you reversed the life of the sage who was without kindred, and constituted him the husband of many maidens.
