Matthew, He must have seemed to them not a meek sufferer, but a formidable enemy that must be crushed. " It was ...not by endurance only that He took their place in the affections of the people.
On several occasions while we seem to be looking at the Man of sorrows we start back at hearing the voice of the Victor. His disciples felt themselves to be in the presence of the Man of sorrows, when they, wishing to help Him, said, " Lord, shall we smite with the sword ?" They felt themselves in the presence of a Conqueror, voluntarily suffering, when He said, " Thinkest thou not that I can pray to My Father, and He shall presently send Me twelve legions of angels ?" Pilate seemed to be speaking to His victim when he said, " Knowest Thou not that I have power to con- demn Thee, and have power to release Thee ?" but it was the Conqueror's voice which said to him, " Thou sayest that I am a King.
