MONSIEUR PASCAL'S ADDRESS.
In the year 1849, when I was a child, in Paris, I remember seeing a party of adventurous Frenchmen march- ing along with music, to take the boat for Rouen and Havre, and thence to California, that unknown country of the New World. How far I was then from imagining that one day I should have to address you here in San Francisco, in the name of a jury, largely composed of Europeans, on the subjects which interest you all in the highest degree; on education, on literature, on science, above all on art, that sign of the highest civilization of a people.
