426 MISSISSIPPI, WEST TENNESSEE, ETC. tdup. XXXV^ 150, while the enemy had actually engaged about 1,000 men and his battery of six pieces. We charged the enemy twice and repelled o»e charge from bim, ...when, finding ourselves about to be flanked on both sides, we yielded the field.
Our loss was 2 men killed and 5 wounded. The enemy admitted a loss of 7 killed, 6 wounded, and 20 prisoners. We lost 8 men taken as prisoners. Some small proportion of my men ingloriously fled the field, but o'enerally my companies tought bravely and retired in good order.
1 desire especially to mention Captains [R.] Burrow, [J. H.] Hazle- wood, [W. A.] Bell", [J. H.] Hicks, and [J. S.] Oaruthers, who distin- guished themselves for courage ; also Lieut.
