They were important because they dealt with a particularly difficult region in Europe, namely, the frontiers of Germany on East and West. In essence they were an application to a particular case of the principle of the Covenant. That is to say, they provided for the pacific settlement of all frontier disputes, with an extra provision that in case either side attacked on the Rhine frontier, all the signatories of the Treaties, including ourselves, would combine against the aggressor.
