It is an act of the human spirit, not simply the state that comes over the spirit, and is unde- fined and vague. This act has run the whole gamut of human emotion. First of all it was fear that drove the trembler to the feet of his God; and he sought to make terms with him, sometimes by playing off one deity against the other, in order that where Mercury was too cunning Zeus might be strong, or Minerva wise; making terms with Juno, of whom Jupiter was really afraid ; making terms with the Fates, the Gray Sisters who stood behind the Gods.
