From 1861 to 1871 the decline was probably due to the diminished gold yield and the discovery of richer fields in the neighbouring States. Fnnn 1891 to 1901 the results of the Chinese Restriction Act, which was passed in 1888, are evident. In 1887, the year before the passing of the Act, Digitized by Google TOFULATIOK^ a29 Uie number of Chinese arriving in New South Wales was 4,436, in 1888 the arrivals were 1,848, but since thait year the highest number was 176 in 1904.
