upon this knowledge the particular intercession of the saints in heaven is founded, and that again is the foundation of invocation of saints. Hence it follows, that the prime foundation of invocation of saints, laid by the papists, is overthrown by the ge- neral consent of the purest and best ages of the church of Christ, and that most agreeably also to the Scriptures of the New Testame

XIII. And accordingly it is very apparent, that there was no such thing practised in the church (by the catholics I mean) as invocation of saints for at least three hundred years after Christ. Let the au- thor of the letter produce any one testimony to the purpose, out of any writer of these ages, that is not by learned men of his own party acknowledged and confessed to be supposititious and forged, and I will yield them the whole cause in this controversy.
This is a very liberal offer ; and yet I will stand to it, and do not fear in the least that the protestant cause will be any loser by it.
