The old gods and goddesses, like the traitorous chiefs and priests of the various nations, had always been on the side of the Roman authorities. If help was to come from any god, it must be one Ihat the mass of the proletarians had not yet be- come acquainted with, one to whom they could all turn, regardless of nationalities, and who would take sides with them against the Roman power and against the gods that had forsaken them in their dire need.
There were many slaves, of course, who had lost ...faith in any and all gods. But these sceptical ones had at least one very good reason for not opposing the religious longings of their fellow- 53 THE WORLD'S REVOLUTIONS sufferers, and this was the secret hope of eluding the vigilance of the Roman masters, if they pre- tended to meet for religious worship, in order to discuss their revolutionary work. It would then be a battle of one all-powerful proletarian god against the other gods, and if the issue was put in this way there was every reason to believe that even Roman soldiers would learn to side with them and worship their new god.
