GOVERNOR TILDEN was present by invitation at the fair of the Young Women s Christian Association, held at the Academy of Music on the evening of Saturday the 7th of May, 1876. The Governor s allusion to Mr. James Stokes is explained by the fact that that excellent gentleman had given fifteen thousand dollars to the purchase of the building occupied by the Associa tion. Mr. Stokes s father was the late Thomas Stokes, who shares with Robert Raikes the fame of founding the modern Sunday-School... system. After paying his respects to the offi cers of the Association, the Governor was conducted to the centre box in the first tier, where he made the following brief address.
