Shall we condemn all people for praying who do not pray wisely and in a manly spirit ? Is prayer of no benefit wdien associated with ignorance and childishness ? I do not think so. I think that every one, according to his spiritual age or stature, according to his immature or matured development, has a right to pray as he pleases, to pour out before his loving Father what- ever be in his heart, to ask even for impossible or injurious things — for those very things which he will one day thank Go...d for refusing to grant. I say we all have a Divine right to tell to God our most secret hopes and desires, and to use a child's privilege of carrying its care to a loving Father's ear.
And I go on to affirm that even in such childish praying there is enormous benefit to the soul. The practice intensifies and strengthens the tie between the soul and God. Sooner or later all the childish- ness will be outgrown and all the benefit of daily communion with God will remain. For the essence of all prayer is the recognition of the fact, and the reaUsation of the fact, that God is our true Father and we are His own children, w^e the objects of His ceaseless love, He the loving Friend in wdiom we put our ceaseless trust.
