This fork is, however, supposed ...to have been^used for sacred purposes ; but a knife and fork, apparently implements of daily u^e, were fo^ind in 1853, in excavating an Anglo-Saxon bunal-ground at Haruham Hills, near Salisbury {Archceologia, vol. XXXV. p. .266). The fork w^ not unknown to tl^e* Romans, as may be seen by the specinjien engraved byCaylus, and stated by him to have been fo^nd in the Appian Way ; but this, like the later specimen found at Sevingtou, may have been used for sacred purposes.
Domestic Manners. 133 TODDY, the term for a mixture of spirits and water, appears to be taken from the Indian word tari or tadif pronounced todd^ hy Euro- peans, — the sap or wine of a pahn.
