Lovell carried the horn himself, as he had been wont to do, and, on his invi- tation, I habitually rendered him all the assist- ance in the field that I could. I had the advantage of knowing every hound in the pack, and what his capabilities were, and, after a few days' horse exercise with me, they became handy enough ; but even so, it was no easy task to hunt another man's pack, with servants not my own, but only temporarily under my orders, and riding horses lent by another person still !
