The lady of the house received her on condition that she was to be resigned wholly to her care ; her mother, however, 120 insisted on coming to see her once a week, because she said, the child loved h...er so much, that she would fret herself ill if she did not; she always left her little girl in tears. Why was this so? because she had just parted from a parent, from whom she had never experienced reproof, and who had gratified her every desire. An instance of the child's affection for her mother occurred shortly afterwards: a friend of her's called at the school, from whom she learned that this mother was very ill: her preceptress found her in tears : " What is the matter, my dear?" said she to her.
