All true legitimate... religion in the sense in which I have here used the word, must be acknowledged and endorsed by an intelligent philosophy, and must harmonize with all ascertained scientific truths. Unless this harmony with the most en- lightened reason is secured, religion will always become not a true but a spurious system of faith, based upon ignorance and filled with superstition and leading to false notions of God and of Duty. The source of growth in religion, and the tests of its beauty and its use are in the intelligent mind and heart of the human race.
