Sunday, September 7. Still on to the south. We begin to see a few cows and horses grazing along the bank, and that has an almost home-like look.
The same woods of larch and fir, with a good deal of yellow foliage among them, mostly birch, but also aspen, and here and there some deep-red mountain ash trees — ^the same fiat land, without a single ridge, however small, to be seen over the bank of the river, which is here rather lower than it was farther north.
