I had advanced about fifty yards beyond the point where I had last seen it, when, to my astonishment, I came suddenly upon the heart of the animal lying upon the ground, and a few yards further on lay the animal itself, quite dead. It was, of course, impossible that the bullet could have caused such a disruption as this, and apparently the only explanation is to suppose that the animal had been seized and torn open by some beast of prey, probably a wolf, which, happening to be close at hand, ha...d been attracted to the spot by the smell of blood, and had retreated, unseen, on becoming aware of my approach. I now remounted the elephant, and continued beat- ing the long grass. Suddenly up jumped a tiger, close to the elephant's trunk. He gave a loud " Wough ! wough ! " and instantly disappeared in the long grass ; IN THE BOON AND ULWAR. 95 but I could mark his course by seeing the cover waving above him as he passed. I therefore took a chance shot at the moving grass. On examining the place where he was passing when I fired I could find no blood, nor had the animal answered the shot by a growl, as it usually does when hit.
