De Groof was a dead man before he had a chance properly to try his handiwork. Not only this, but the ascent was doubly unfortunate, Simmons the aeronaut having a narrow escape from death. For when de Groof detached his apparatus, the balloon, suddenly lightened, rose with such fearful rapidity that Simmons lost consciousness. When he regained it, he was in full descent. Just beneath him lay a railway ; as he fell on the line his eye caught a train running upon him at full steam.
