When Francis wanted money or salaried office, his applications seem to have been almost invariably made to Queen Elizabeth or her Ministers.

' In 1740 Dr. Mead, Alexander Pope, and the wealthy third Earl Burlington, together with a ^Ir. Martin, raised funds to erect in Westminster Abbey a statue to 282 TUDOR PROBLEMS Shakespeare.
