Yet in these writings older books now lost have been so conscientiously copied, and genuine reminiscences of the prophet's contemporaries have been handed down so exactly in the words of the first narrator, that many of Mohammed's sayings and doings stand before us as exact...ly and vividly as if we had been eye-witnesses of the events. I believe it was in this way that our present historical books came together. ' Certainly if the parallel be exact, the sorrowful con- clusion will soon be reached that our present historical books are, like Canticles, a product of ' imperfect recollection. ' In the first place, it is unwarrantable to speak of the sources from which the life of Mahomet is drawn, as dating two centuries after the events. The Koran itself is left out of account, and that is accepted as to all intents and purposes a collection of documents contemporary with Mahomet.
