To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
The Wakalla flowed in as a river; it did not leap in as a cataract. It divided the valley ; the rift was but an expansion of its canyon. For five or six miles we kept on before we found a practicable descent. The farther we went the higher we got, and soon we reached the snow line. Just on the border we sighted a herd of wapiti, some feeding on the miserable grass, others couching dreamily on the snow. There were^ about twenty of them in all, and, after an exciting stalk, which I need not stop ...to describe, we bagged four. The pursuit led us down almost to the bank of the Wakalla. Fortunately the bulls fell near together. When we had dropped the last we looked round for a camping-place, as, though it was early, the abundance of food thus suddenly fallen to us was worth securing. Near us, at the foot of a precipice, was a heap of frag- mentary granite, brought down by a recent- fall, which had marked a long scar on the face of the cliff. The masses had piled themselves up as though to form a Cyclopean temple.
