The mass of snow and ice which accumulates at the head of gulches at these points, loosening next to the mountain by the action of the water from the melt- ing snows, sweeps down the mountain side with a velocity that carries everything before it. At the one above the mouth of Hoope's creek, I saw trees and rubbish which had been driven before the avalanche across the creek, and four or five hundred feet up the northern slope of the valley.
