What reading level is Up the Yang Tse book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

I also observed fennel growing wild. Sin Chow produces saltpetre, quantities of which we met being conveyed to I^an-oh'uan, to be used in the powder manufacture. Some said t^e fuel used was Pe-hsiang (P cedar), others the Ma-Un {1 Fraxintfs), facts which convey no realisable information to me, but which I note down for future reference. Before reaching &n Chow, onr road divides into two, the eastern branch joining the Ma-tsui road at Ta-kwo Ch'ang, 90 li distant, passing Yuan Ts'Sn and Hwui-lun...g Ch'ang, (each thirty li), on the way. The Ewan-fn Ch'iao stream runs to Yiian Ts'en ; but I may mention once for all that nothing we have yet seen, since leaving the Yang-tsze, at all deserves the name of a river. Our course from Sin Chow still lay south, through a small plain richly cultivated with opium and wheat, but not in a very advanced condition. At Tan-ma K'an, (5 li), we commenced the ascent of the side of the narrow glen through which we were advancing ; and, after climbing 600 feet, reached the neck of Tsz-ni-'rb-p'o, (13 li from Sin Chow).
