When Thomson writes, But now those white unblemished minutes, whence The fabling poets took their golden age, Are foimd no more amid these iron times, he may be thinking of Horace and his longing for the arva heata, of Isaiah and his picture of the reign of the Prince of Peace, or of any of their numerous imitators. But when we examine the li...nes which were in the early editions, but were not included in those of 1744 and 1746, it is clear that Vergil is his chief though not his only model.
