Transferring our effects to the smaller canoes we pursued our way, stopping now and again to test a bar in the river for gold. We found it in very small quan- tities, nothing like sufficient to pay for working, and the general appearance of the country and its moun- tains did not argue the presence of that metal in the beds of the streams.
