They had merciless adversaries. Opechancanough had spared nobody. He had even before the massacre, according to a contemporary writer, "practiced with a King on the Eastern Shore to furnish him with a kind of poison to poison us." He had preferred the bludgeon; and poison and bludgeons were weapons that it was neces- sary to meet with something stronger than rose-water.
An indiscriminate butchery of the Indians followed.
