Some 30, 000 veteran British soldiers were now rendered available for service in Europe. Moreover, the very prospect of the outbreak of a war which would in all probability lead to the return of Napoleon to France, caused the Allies to hesitate, and even before the end of 176 CASTLEREAGH December signs had not been wanting of the willing- ness of the Tsar and the King of Prussia to abate something of their exorbitant pretensions. By dint of much perseverance, and aided by his conciliatory manner, Castlereagh induced the Tsar to recognize the Austrian claims upon part of Poland, and the King of Prussia to be satisfied with a portion of Saxony.
