He began his wars at the age of twenty years, and at thirty-two the world had been subdued to his authority. Nations were his play- things, thrones were his toys. And in a most em- phatic and special sense dominion was given to him.

But he did not live to enjoy it or to put it into fixed and settled shape. Nor did he have a regular successor to organize it. It fell to his four principal generals, who ruled and administered it from four different centres, whence this winged leopard is represented with ,four heads.
