At intervals of ten minutes, perhaps, the same voice rang out the same " Oh, Lord ! " upon the still- ness. Sleep seemed to follow it away through the darkness. Hour after hour passed, and still I lay awake, listening to this monotonous cry. It did not seem one of terror. It appeared rather one inspired by loneliness, by suffering, and by the absence of hope. It was suggestive of the tired moan of a weary child, which wishes for, yet suffers, and is too exhausted to rest.
