Our hesper, or vesper-flower, was described by that patriarch of herb-seers, the English botanical antiquary, Gerarde, so long ago as 1597. It is probable that the beautiful columnar flower, the double white rocket, is a sport of our plant, pro- duced by the multiplication of its petals, and by a modification of other organs into petals. It was first noticed in Itaty, and our garden flower is said to be a native of that fine climate.
