He said in a letter to his son ; "I never felt so rich before nor after as I did the day I found that Spanish real. At the age of sixteen he entered the store of Stone & Bellows, then in trade in town, as clerk, and at the age of twenty he was entrusted with a large inventory of goods to dispose of in the western wilds.
