For many years he was a strong and controlling factor in the Republican Party of Tennessee. While his influence was dominant in the party, he was familiarly, and I might say affectionately, called the " easy boss, " and this expression was significant of the manner and way he exercised power and even con- trol in his party. While he was a Republican, he was more essentially a Tennesseean and a southerner.
