VIII. Artificial Limbs.
1. Artificial members should be fmictional and es- thetic; that is, they should, if possible, restore the function and the form of the amputated part. They should be supplemented by a functional and profes- sional reeducation.
2. Substitution ought to be as early as possible. In the case of lower limbs it should be made as soon as the condition of the wound permits. The use of crutches should be limited as far as possible. To enable the patient to walk before his wound i
...s healed, temporary supports may be devised, the best being those contrived by the surgeon himself.
3. For the upper members the substitutes are made of leather with metal splints. They include : 1 (a) An a&sistance arm, a kind of simple, cheap sub- stitute which serves a laborer fairly well as soon as his stump is healed.
(6) An arm for appearance and work. — ^This is a ' more complicated and esthetic contrivance than the as- !
sistance arm, but stronger and more useful. Such limbs are made up of (1) some means of suspension upon the shoulder and breast (a leather plate, a corset.
