Nearly all the guns were behind fortifi- cations, so that the men handling them would have been protected from all shells, except such heavy ones as could penetrate the fortifications, and explode in- side. The guns were so far apart, especially the 9.2- inch guns, that no injury to any one gun would have affected any other gun; and each gun occupied such a small space, that it would have been extremely hard to hit it from a ship in the bay. We heard afterwards, however, that the Span- iards had arraigned two telescopes about a mile apart along the water front, and by means of telephone and telegraph had made a very good Position Find- er, so that they could give the range of any ship con- tinually to every gun, even if the ship were moving through the water very fast.
