by 135 ft. The E. Wing was occupied by the Secretary of the Interior in 1853. The new portions of the building are of Maryland marble on the exterior and granite on the quad- rangle. The first building is painted white to harmonize with the extension. The edifice rests on a sub-base of gran- ite, above which is a basement of the material of the super- structure, after which rises the order, pierced with two stories of windows, the whole surmounted by an acroteria to cor- respond with the earlier portion of the stiiicture, of appro- priate simplicity and dimensions.
