Junot knew, on the 2nd August, of Wellesley's landing, and prepared r — -- -, to meet him ; but through his chief lieutenant, not in person, for Lisbon was so hostile he did not like to leave the capital himself. One general, Loison, was sent by the south side of the Tagus to Abrantes ; another, Laborde, advanced directly north, towards Leiria, where he was to watch the approaching British and cover Loison. The two French columns were to combine about Leiria, but Sir Arthur forestalled them the...re, having entered that place in strength on the nth August. Laborde was then no nearer than Batalha, eight miles distant, and Loison was still some five-and-twentv miles away, with wearied men who had wasted their strength in forced marches, aiming at an impossible junction with Laborde.
Laborde now sought for a position in which to give battle, but could find nothing suitable here at Batalha, the site of one of the most splendid monasteries of ancient Portugal, a marvel, indeed, of church architecture.
