Polk county is the next. It contains good land, and is well watered and timbered. Raccoon river drains the western part of the county and empties into the Des Moines. It presents many fine farms and comfortable im- provements. Population, 4,~515 ; dwellings, 756 ; farms, 321 ; manufactories, 9.
The old village of Fort Des Moines is the county-seat.
It was evacuated by the United States Dragoons in 1846.
It is situated on the Des Moines, opposite the mouth of the Raccoon ; and at the proposed crossing of the Rail- road to Council Bluffs.
