There were, if I am not mistaken, three leading forces engaged in bringing about this great revolu- tion, and effecting the organisation of new forms.

A new religion may be instituted with the greatest vigour, the utmost enthusiasm, and a tremendous amount of inner emotion ; it may at the same time lay ever so much stress on spiritual freedom — where was all this ever more powerfully expressed than in Paul's teaching ?
