The word is Italian, and means joke or jest. The term was first used as a direction to players, when it appeared as scherzando.
But in the early part of the seventeenth century Italian canzonets wer...e popu- lar in Germany and were called scherzi musicali. When it became the custom to name the different parts of a musical composition, the terms allegretto scher- zando and presto scherzando appeared.
We find several instances in the sonatas of Emanuel Bach, and even Johann Bach wrote a scherzo in one of his suites. The modern scherzo is a development of the minuet. Haydn took the stateliness out of the minuet by increasing its speed and introducing the element of humor ; but 57 Chap.
