Nay, the folly and blindness, that had hitherto directed his course, would be more likely than not to carry him on to the absurdity of expecting from them the ut- most devotion in his hour of need; and he would probably not be one whit less surprised and shocked at their supposed want of gratitude, than he would be if he had established the most unquestionable claims upon it. The mere exhibition of confidence, in whatever degree, simply proves nothing.
