Cross's Eclectic Shorthand has a hobby of its own, which the author styles the " Chiro- graphic Ellipse, " and explains thus : " In writing, we constantly employ two forces, viz. : the protective and the retractive. Ellipses lying in five directions two sloping to the left, two to the right, and one lying horizontally with five straight lines in the same directions, form the basis of his alphabet.
