President Wilson set about learning the real reason of Carranza 's action. To his satisfaction he found that the presence of more than 100, 000 American soldiers on WOODROW WILSON 289 the border had a salutary effect, and Carranza's replies to his questions grew more conciliatory. The American prisoners were surrendered and the crisis passed.
